Artist Statement
Jasper Zijlstra (1990) is a ‘photographic explorer’ dedicated to inspiring awe and improvement through his work. He uses his camera to gain access to complex, unfamiliar or concealed worlds, varying from sterile laboratories to personal stories. In collaboration with ‘local guides’ such as scientists and experts (by experience), he uncovers and visually interprets their stories. His visual language emerges from an ongoing interaction between research and photographic experiments. He creates aesthetic images of complex information that function as new interpretations for experts and evokes curiosity in lay people. By focussing on positive stories concerning nature, sustainability and social cohesion, he seeks to enhance people's understanding, wonder and need to care, for new worlds as well as their own.
