The majority of Dutch fields are planted with a handful of ‘cash crops’ (crops that are most in demand, such as maize or potato). Climate change and biodiversity loss require our food system to change. What can tropical crops contribute to this? As a showcase Dr. Eric Schranz & Dr. Martina Huber planted 48 different varieties of (semi)tropical crops in growing tunnels in dutch soil, to examine what possibilities there are for more diversity in crops.
